We have almost arrived in September and, for me, this is the beginning of the year, it’s time for new projects and ideas. Lately I had the feeling of not creating anything new and the few things I was doing didn’t satisfy me. Then I discovered this contest and our first heart shaped book was born.
Time ago on Instagram I noticed this hashtag #areyoubookenough; I opened it and found the most creative and absurd books ever seen. All of these books were part of a monthly challenge created by Sarah Mottaghinejad of Ink and Awl, a binding and printing company in Seattle. The theme of August is Heart, a simple and complicated theme at the same time.
The reasons why I wanted to take part in this challenge are two. For a long time I was looking for a stimulus to create books with different shapes and materials and participating in a contest with a defined and monthly theme is a good opportunity for a messy procrastinator like me! (Not to mention the biblical times with which I update the blog!) The other reason is to be part of a community (though only virtual) full of talent and creativity.
This is the heart-shaped book for the challenge! I realized the structure starting from a circle with radial folds, a very simple form that can also be used to create pop up cards. In the profile of La Mandragola on Instagram there are the first photos of the book.
In the pages Flavia has drawn this quote of poetry no. 919 by Emily Dickinson:
If I can stop one heart from breaking
I will not live in vain
These are the themes for autumn and winter (my favorite is Flora & Fauna) and I already have some ideas for the September and October books. Who knows what will come out!
And you? What projects do you have for the coming months?
